Lead to Uplift Others

Lead to Uplift Others

Nicole Malachowski |

Great leaders don’t focus on their individual power and authority. They understand their role is one of empowerment. They know that to serve and empower those around them, they must provide opportunities for growth and fulfillment, and to elevate their team members so they can make their way to success. Just like a Thunderbird pilot, they must set a clear direction for, and be aligned with, the entire team.

There are many things you can do to lead in a way that uplifts others. If you communicate, offer guidance and support, and acknowledge achievements, you help your team navigate toward success. Communication based around active listening functions as your compass of empathy, communicating to your team that their thoughts and ideas are valued. Providing resources, mentoring, and encouragement, is how you empower your team and show that you support their personal and professional growth. And it’s vital to celebrate wins and successes. This is how you cultivate an environment where leadership is about service to others, and service to your team.

Leaders who serve always consider the input and feedback of their teammates, which allows them to remove any barriers to progress effectively. They check their egos at the door so they can share their time and expertise to help the team reach its fullest potential. Servant-leaders are contributors and collaborators… associates and assistants… partners and promoters.

Leadership as service allows us to dedicate ourselves to the positive growth of our teams because service-focused leaders empower others with a genuine desire to see them thrive. Pilots take this kind of care of their crews and the people they serve. Like piloting a plane, leadership is about using planning and decision-making skills to ensure the well-being and positive outcomes for individuals and the larger team. It’s about creating a culture of trust and fostering an atmosphere where everyone can collaborate and innovate together. Leadership isn’t just about making a solo flight toward success. It’s about uplifting others to help you reach that destination, with as little turbulence as possible.
