Values are the Competitive Advantage in an AI World

Artificial intelligence is transforming how we work, communicate, and make decisions. It is also challenging how we relate to each other as teammates.

Technology may change how we work. Values determine how we lead.

As a former fighter pilot, I learned that the most advanced aircraft in the world is only as effective as the values, judgment, and accountability of the people in the cockpit. The same is true with AI. It can process information, identify patterns, make suggestions and increase efficiency. But it cannot replace integrity, empathy, or trust. AI cannot replace leadership.

The challenge isn't choosing between people and technology. It's ensuring that technology serves people and not the other way around. Organizations focused solely on speed and automation risk losing sight of the qualities that drive long-term success: trust, purpose, and teamwork. These aren't soft skills. They're leadership essentials.

The leaders who will thrive in the AI era won't simply adopt technology faster. They'll integrate technology without sacrificing humanity. They'll understand that while AI can inform decisions, leaders remain responsible for choosing the right ones (judgment) and for owning consequences (accountability).

Here are three things to think about as you lead in an AI world:

1. Define Your Non-Negotiables

Identify the values that will guide decisions no matter how technology evolves. Clear values ensure AI supports your mission rather than overrides it.

2. Put Humans at the Center

AI should enhance human potential, not replace it. Ask how new tools impact trust, engagement, and opportunity for the people you serve.

3. Lead with Transparency and Accountability

Be clear about how AI influences decisions. Technology can provide recommendations, but leaders are responsible for the choices and their outcomes.

The AI revolution is not a test of technology; it's a test of leadership.

As machines become more capable, the qualities that make us human become even more valuable: character, courage, empathy, integrity, and purpose. The future will certainly be shaped by artificial intelligence, but it must be guided by human values.

Because in a world increasingly powered by technology, our values remain our greatest competitive advantage.
